How to Use Excel-based Form 1040 to calculate taxes: 

The IRS Success Excel spreadsheet for Form 1040 will help U.S. citizens who pay Federal taxes, better calculate, file, and maintain accurate records of their taxes. IRS Success provides step-by-step instructions for completing Form 1040 in a pre-formulated Excel spreadsheet.

STEP 1: Enter dollar amounts in the orange cells circled in Figure 1 below. The green “Total” cells will automatically populate.

STEP 2: Using the amount on Line 15, look up your tax amount in the Tax Tables on pages 65 to 77 of Form 1040 Instruction Manual.

STEP 3: Enter the tax amount on Line 16 of this form, in the pink cell circled in Figure 2 below.

STEP 4: Continue to enter dollar amounts into the orange cells as seen in Figure 2 below. The green “Total” cells will automatically populate.

STEP 5: If Line 34 is a positive number, this is your refund, green cell.

STEP 6: If Line 37 is a positive number, this is the amount you owe, red cell.

The Excel spreadsheet for Form 1040 includes worksheets for the following Schedules:

All of the worksheets included in the 1040 Excel spreadsheet are password-protected, and all of the formulas are automated and hidden. However, customers can add new worksheets to the file or create links to other spreadsheets.
